Know-how aus Urzeiten

Hier ein Auszug:
From 1910 government legislation assumed wide-ranging powers over the lives of Wumpurrai (Aboriginal people). This includes the power to remove children from their families for 'protection' - it is estimated nationally that beween 1910 and 1970, 45.000 to 55.000 children were taken away (at times, one child in three). In western and nothern Australia, authorities targeted children of 'part' Aboriginal descent. Warumungu children werde taken to 'half-caste' institutions in Darwin, Alice Springs or as far away as Melbourne and Adelaide. Women whose children were taken grieved as if the child has died. They set up 'sorry camps' and the white ochre of mouring rituals could be seen on their bodies for weeks after the event.
Legislative change from the mid 1960s and Aboriginal activism from the mid 1970s brought an end to the practice of removing children from their families because they were Aboriginals. Yet the impact of these policies is still felt today. The Stolen Generation Resource Centre in Tennent Creek provides counselling and assistance to individuals and families who are still dealing with the repercussions.
